Info

The poster as a medium is evidence of current events, it documents reality. Artists, designers who create posters are not indifferent to the times, which for the past two years seem to have become increasingly complicated, difficult, cruel and uncertain. We, the organisers, are also curious about this visual diagnosis by the participants of the biennale, which takes place in the heart of Europe, a place where disturbing thoughts intersect. The paradox of graphic design lies in a form that is at once democratic, generic and individual: the creator, in his chosen personal way, sends information about his place of existence, his culture, his sensibility to other people – to an audience who should, by definition, understand the message because that is what poster art is all about.

Of its own accord, humanity has faced unprecedented situations in which, in addition to getting along with nature, it has to deal with the creations of an intricate reality it has created. The general notion was that civilisational progress was supposed to elevate man above the surrounding world, yet modern philosophers often assess this as a trap that streamlines life while taking away the freedom of the individual - artificial intelligence (AI). The poster biennale is also a point of view of a form of expression, in the face of which we ask ourselves what is the point of the existence of the human element in art, in creativity. Is anything able to replace human sensitivity, compassion, delicacy, uniqueness, irony?

In essence, the IPB's main exhibition always has the value of an uplifting set of impressions, in which one can see both the chronicling of the events of the past two years and the creative courage, diversity, breadth, openness - in other words, everything that can be defined generally as freedom. Let the International Poster Biennale, then, be a celebration of the freedom that each of us is fighting for these days.

HOME. What is home in our lives? Where do we come from, what is our tradition, our identity? What role does it play in our lives? Is it more than our birthplace, our place of residence? And what might the loss of this place mean for everyone?

OFFICE OF THE INTERNATIONAL POSTER BIENNALE

Małgorzata Cichocka

The International Poster Biennale was held for the first time in 1966 (at the 'Zachęta' galleries) as the first international cyclical event in the world devoted to the poster field. The idea for this type of review originated among Polish graphic artists and was directly initiated by Eryk Lipiński, for many years the organisation was handled by Prof. Józef Mroszczak, always assisted by Prof. Henryk Tomaszewski, and since 1990, Prof. Lech Majewski (currently President of the International Poster Biennale) has taken care of the Biennale. After 1994, the Biennale was held at the Poster Museum at Wilanów to finally return in 2018 to its birthplace, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

Having worked for years to build its brand, the Biennale has always guaranteed the highest quality of the presented posters, as well as signs of innovation in the field. From the very beginning, the IPB has had a circle of supporters visiting Warsaw every 2 years, artists participating traditionally and competing with each other for laurels in this event, as well as, over time, new interested young poster fans.

In essence, the main exhibition of the IPB always has the value of an uplifting set of impressions, in which one can see both the chronicling of the events of the past two years and the creative courage, diversity, breadth, openness - in other words, everything that can be defined generally as freedom. Let the International Poster Biennale therefore be a celebration of the freedom for which each of us is fighting these days.
