Results of the 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw

On June 9, 2018, following two days of careful deliberations, the Jury of the 26th Warsaw International Poster Biennale: Zdzisław Schubert (Poland, chairman of the Jury), Jianping He (Germany), Anna Naumova (Russia), Catherine Zask (France) and Jerzy Skakun (Poland) decided to award the following prizes in this year’s main competition:

Gold medal:

HELMO: Thomas Couderc i Clément Vauchez (France), for the poster „Jazzdor / Strasbourg Jazz Festival”, 2017

Silver medal:

Vladimir Chaika (Russia), for the poster „Swarovski”, 2017

Bronze medal :

Kazunari Hattori (Japan) for the poster „A Cup of Sake”, 2016

In justifying its decisions, the Jury informed that the golden medal was awarded for „the rhythm of lettering and graphic components pinpointing the spirit of jazz music”. The winning poster „is a play of hidden and exposed components”. The second place was awarded for „a sarcastic take on the revolution and what happened to it.”, while the third place was singled out for the subtly depicted power of Japanese aesthetics”.

The Jury also awarded the Józef Mroszczak honorary prize. It was given to Łukasz Luka Rayski for the „Konstytucja” (“Constitution”) 2016 poster. The selected work was praised for „a smart association made between the letters of the Polish word “konstytucja” (constitution) that extracts hidden words and meanings.”

A total of 245 works by 158 artists from 30 countries were selected for the main competition exhibition. In accordance with the regulations, these works were selected to participate in the 26th edition of the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw.

In turn, for the Independent – the open thematic competition, marking in 2018 the 100th anniversary of Poland’s regaining independence and similar anniversaries in other countries of the region, following a pre-selection from among 848 applications, a total 84 works by 78 artists from 18 countries were selected to participate. Jury awarded the following prizes:

Gold medal:

Tu Shen (China), for the poster „The Cost of Safety”, 2014

Silver medal:

Wojciech Domagalski (Poland), for the poster „Polska”, 2018

Bronze medal:

Mingliang Li (China), for the poster „Poland 100th, 2018

The first prize was awarded for the interpretation of “mass surveillance of the society and the perils involved”. The second prize was given for transferring “the theme of the competition on a circus arena”, where „the podium is joyful, but also void”, while the third place was praised for „artist’s free and expressive thoughts on Poland”.

The International Poster Biennale will last until July 15th. The main competition’s exhibition is available for visitors in the Salon Akademii Gallery, Krakowskie Przedmieście 5, on the premises of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (entrance from Traugutta street).
