More Over – The 26th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw Conference
Graphic designers’ way of working changes together with the technological development and transformations of the communication methods. Ken Garland and Victor Papanek stressed that design is not only the commercial work and that designers have a mission to engage in activities related to social or environmental issues. Their voice was not alone. At the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21stcentury this kind of thinking, as well as the working model connected to the mentioned mission was pushed to the side track.
After several years of awe and fascination upon the capabilities of modern displays, Internet, animation etc. craft is coming back to former glory. The ideals of Robert Bringhurst find their way to web design and young designers are eager to study calligraphy, typesetting, and other techniques that enrich their design workshop. Together it forms a modern identity of our visual culture.
During the “More Over” conference we plan to give the stage to designers, who undertake a variety of grass-roots activities – socially engaged and bringing back the local, cultural context and traditional craft of design work.
