June 9 and 10, 10:00–13:00 and 15:00–17:00 – CONFERENCE OF THE 26TH INTERNATIONAL POSTER BIENNALE: “More Over – concerning graphic-design-related grassroots activities”, coordinated by: Mateusz Machalski and Borys Kosmynka, Auditorium of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie 37/39; admission free

The way the work of designers changes along with technological developments and transformations in the field of communication. Ken Garland and Victor Papanek have stressed that design is not just about fulfilling commercial orders, and that designers have a mission involving socially / environmentally committed grassroots activities. They were not alone in this opinion. However, at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, this way of thinking, as well as the work model associated with mission, became sidetracked.

After a dozen or so years of delight over the possibilities offered by new display methods, the Internet and animation, the traditional studio is returning to favor. Robert Bringhurst’s assumptions are being used in website design, and young designers are increasingly willing to learn calligraphy, work in typesetting studios and look into other techniques to increase their design resources. Together, this consists in building a modern identity for visual culture.

At the “More Over” conference, we will be listening to graphic designers who undertake various types of grassroots activities – those that are socially committed and those restoring local cultural contexts and traditional crafts to design.

June 10, 11:00–13:00 – “Paint your own poster – my Poland” – fun and a competition for children; on this day, a special Biennale Television Studio organized by Polish Television’s 3rd Program will be broadcasting from the grounds of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Krakowskie Przedmieście 5
